He was an idol of mine growing up in Ohio. I think he could have played other pro sports, soccer does not count.. Anyway, he was the Carl Lewis of Britain.

The only Brit would could play in the NFL??? What are you on about, we have had hundreds of world class athletes who would whup NFL players…look up Linford Christie-6’2 and the most ripped sprinter in the history of track.

Thompson’s made a comment on Hingsen at a press conference before the event that went something like “…he’s promised he’s bringing the gold home – the only way I think he’ll do that is to steal mine or do another event”

If Hoy is knighted, then why not Thompson?

Trashjack101 April 4, 2010 at 4:21 AM

I want to be like him :(

keithcarey April 4, 2010 at 5:15 AM

He looks like it to me. He may be the only Brit who could play in the NFL or NBA. I’ve never seen anybody run and jump like that before. When I had my “ups”, I long jumped 21′ and HJ @ 6′ 2″ Too slow to sprint or go over 21′

THE BETTER ATHELETE IS THE ONE THAT BRINGS THE GOLD HOME.

ability nerves determination and willingness to win.

simbaslayer April 4, 2010 at 7:40 AM

xactly, who ever is better all around wins. there is a guy on my team in d1 who never wins an event but has the conference record

Don’t know. But Dundee is a good place to come from. Not sure that Dundee is any more or less prone to excremental comments.

BillDFC April 4, 2010 at 7:55 AM

Is Daley Thompson’s mother from Dundee?

21shergar April 4, 2010 at 8:24 AM

In the word of Daley Thompson, “S**t!”

21shergar April 4, 2010 at 8:47 AM

Daley Thompson is the greatest athlete of all time.

xxStingRaexx April 4, 2010 at 9:08 AM

thompson won the gold….
jurgen “apparently” had a bad knee…
but daley is the best.
will always be the best.
in this lifetime we will never see a decathlon done better.

Kronnie1 April 4, 2010 at 9:14 AM

Yes that is why i guess Daley was a good distance ahead of Hingsen in most every event, because Hingsen was a much better all rounder ….

who won the gold ?
theres your better all rounder

bedsitter1982 April 4, 2010 at 9:38 AM

Hingsen was the better athlet, but Thomson always had the better nerves.
Today they are good frieds.

daley thompson – THE GREATEST ATHLETE OF ALL TIME

Naoisevl April 4, 2010 at 10:20 AM

Love the man. Remember watching this as a kid. Surely Britain’s best athlete ever, and such a fun, nice guy. Definately the best days of British athletics. Maybe the negative economic state of the country brings out sporting best. Here’s hoping we continue that strain currently after 2008.

ultrapedr1042 April 4, 2010 at 10:50 AM

Awesome Awsome. A real sporting hero
